Is he a good guy?

Well, I got an answer from my friend on Facebook.  She vouches for Mr. R.  In fact, she said "go for it".

I don't think she'd be one to say go to Jamaica, but she definitely said go for the chance to get to know Mr. R more.  She knows him from her mission and said he was a great missionary.

After reading that, I was reviewing back on the guys I've dated.
N:  He hated his mission
T: he left his mission really early and didn't go back
R: I don't know if he had a good mission or not
B2008: only on his mission a few months and didn't go back.  He hated it.
This past year - I think the guys haven't been on missions and or are non-starters.

Huh.... just refreshing.

Also, makes me think about my patriarchal blessing:  Make sure he honors his priesthood and honors women.  I've learned examples of Mr. R doing this for sure.  Hmmmm.

Taking Chances

I've been trying to go to sleep for hours but I feel like every synapse is firing and won't stop! I have been talking to B (I'm going to call him Mr. R from now on) for about 2 weeks. We mostly just IM at night, or via my cell phone (google phone is great). We've talked on the phone once since the first date.

So here's what happened since then. I realized my jetblue flight is expiring in a week. And while, I could fly somewhere boring in the states, one of the things I like about JetBlue is that it flies to the Caribbean and if you have a free ticket voucher with JetBlue - then you can go WHEREVER they go. Last fall, I went to Puerto Rico.

So, I posted on my gmail and facebook - asking who wanted to go to the Caribbean with me.
Among the responses, Mr. R chimed in.  Here's the beginning of our conversation Wednesday night:
Mr. R: serious? you sure play girl...
...
Mr. R: going to bed now...saw your status
...
me: last year I went to Puerto Rico on a voucher.
Mr. R: I ain't going with you...but don't think I don't think you're cute or anything
me (teasingly): yeah - You should - 2nd date in the Caribbean...

Okay, so I cut out a lot of our conversation.  But seriously, he started out by saying he wasn't coming...  we joke and are sarcastic on our IMs all the time.  So don't get the wrong impression of him, just based on his grammar.  :).  The conversation also added an invitation to dinner in September when he comes to my town for an unrelated reason (other than to visit me).  I've never been asked out for 3 months ahead of time!

Then tonight (Thursday night) - Mr. R got on IM at 10:30.  We weren't able to talk long because I had a friend over giving  a heart to heart.  By the time I was  able to talk, it was after 11. I think Mr. R goes to work early too.  So here is some of our conversation:

Mr. R: What if I said 'yes' re: going to Caribbean? You trust me? If you were thinking of including me, I'm flattered
11:13 PM me: I'd say when and where... should I trust you?
11:15 PM Mr. R: yes. you can. of course you can
me: r you joking or half-way/maybe serious?
11:17 PM Mr. R: i'm serious.....sheesh
me: sheesh - are you like 12?
11:18 PM Mr. R: sometimes ... around the YM
me: yeah me too - around my 13 year old nephew every once in a while.

So.  We didn't talk much and really talk about details.  But the short story is, there is a chance, I'm going on a second date with Mr. R - in Jamaica.  Is that crazy?

I spent about an hour looking at options with the voucher and I think it's totally do-able.  I also feel like I REALLY can trust him.  Just in case, I emailed my friend that has Mr. R listed on her facebook friends.  I decided I should.  But really, I don't feel like it was necessary.

I really feel like I have to take this chance and that Mr. R is somebody more than just someone to date but someone for my future.  It's crazy to think that way!  We're long-distance and I think there are ways for us to work around that.  Especially because my job doesn't rely on my location.

So back to the trip - a couple things to work around:

My parents and sister/bro-in-law will have hissy fits and quote "Appearance of Evil".  I've traveled with groups with guys before so I think I've just got to stay true to myself.  The difference on this trip is that it's just the two of us.  My plan right now, is not to tell my parents or sister where I'm going or the circumstances.  I think it's better for them to learn after the fact. Is that deceitful?  No.  I'm in my 30's.  I shouldn't have to report my location.  I should also be trusted to stay true to my faith and standards.  And trusted to know who I can trust.  I also think that the omission is just keeping peace instead of causing troubles.

This is crazy!  and Yet.. I just want to take a chance and feel safe and good in this decision.

Nothing is set in stone - but just the fact that this trip is an option!?  What better 2nd date can there be - a trip to Jamaica?!?!?

Okay, it's almost 5 AM.  I really should get some sleep tonight.  Hopefully, the synapses can take a break.

If I've got the pheromone... I want an upgrade

Okay - so I was thinking maybe finally finding the pheromone would be a good thing - but it's bringing me nothing but trouble in the last few hours.

Tonight, I went to a mid-singles dance. All my usual dancing friends have moved on - so I made the decision to go by myself. WoW! I guess I do have the pheromone or something... it was scary tonight. There were few people dancing - we don't have a great population of mid-singles here, so it was about 30 people on the dance floor.

At some point, a guy starting dancing wherever I danced, walking wherever I walked and just showing up where I was. I kept moving my location and people I was talking with and nothing worked.

Finally, this guy I had briefly talked to earlier, came and rescued me and asked me to dance to a fast song. That was a little interesting but then it was a song we could cha-cha to so I asked if he wanted to do that. My rhythm was completely off. Anyway that is besides the point. So the stalker guy was nearby but I was protected right? Well, that song ended and "lady in red" started - AAA! the stalker turned around immediately and asked me to dance before I could even do anything, before the other guy could even ask me! It was crazy. Can I tell you that I made sure about 30 book of mormons could fit between the distance of this guy and I?!?!?! I was so not happy.

As soon as the dance was over - I kept moving away from him as much as I could.

Anyway, the guy who saved me, ended up getting my phone 3 at the end of the night. But he's about 5'7 or so and really, he's nice but so not interested! So was I wrong in giving my number - or can I keep the attitude of - 'yeah lets do something' and expanding my circle of friends?

Anyway, if I have something that is helping me attract guys all of a sudden, I want a newer version because - wow! It's nice to feel attractive but it'd be nice to attract the right guys (I count B, as one of the good/right ones and don't regret the presence of any pheromones on Wednesday night)

Grinning like an idiot

I'm sitting at my booth, typing to B on my IM and I'm grinning like an idiot.

what's your opinion

I know what my opinion was before last night, but maybe think I now should allow for exceptions? Last night, I went on a date with a guy... before I tell you what the question is for your opinion, I'll tell the story, so you can see it from my perspective.

Tuesday night, I arrived at a conference and decided to log on to a dating site and see if anyone new was there. I've decided that in my cynicism, I am super super picky about anyone online. If the guy doesn't match all my "list" [list is fluid and forever changing] then I nix or "close" the match. One of my superficial requirements is height (6'2" is my ideal).

So, Tuesday night, I log onto a site that is not LDS oriented and found that I had "3 New" matches to review. I reviewed and nixed two and kept one - meaning I told it to go to the next step. It went to the next step and 20 minutes later, I saw that this guy had answered. So step 2. He did Step 2. Step 3. and I went to bed - it was after midnight. The next morning, he had answered step 3.

Now normally, I follow the whole rules thing (keep the guy waiting and don't answer right away because that shows you're desperate) - but there were a couple of exceptions for this guy - he was only about 30 minutes from where the conference is this week. So I was kind of thinking - 'why not' - even though, I do need to point out that he is 5'11" on his profile... but oh well.... 'why not'

So he emails and I let him know that I'm not so far away and he emails me - this time we're on real emails.

Now another abnormal step for me - especially for online dating, is to give my REAL personal email address. But here's my rationale for this guy. I had his full name and looked him up on facebook. It turned up that he has 2 of my most conservative friends linked as his friends on facebook. I couldn't see his profile, but just knowing that he knew them, made me think it'd be okay to give him my real email address.

So, we ended up emailing and then gmail chatting almost the whole day yesterday. I was working a booth and there is a lot of down-time....

At the end of the day, we had a reception for the conference attendees. I was hanging out with my friends from the conference, when he IMs and asks if I want to meet him that night. he said, 'it's now or 3245679 months from now... i didn't want to say never because that's too final'.

So, BECAUSE he knows my two friends on facebook, I took the jump and said sure. I told him he had to come to me, since I was without a car on this trip.

He came. He was a little late but I knew that was a possibility.

He showed up at my hotel and we went to dinner at a Mexican restaurant. He had seen it while he drove in and it was within walking distance of my hotel.

The restaurant turned out to be almost all MOLE - I'm not the biggest fan. Luckily, they had different flavors of mole and I chose one that was less ummm, different? and it was good food. The chicken was a grilled chicken and you can't go wrong with that.

There was live music in the outside part of the restaurant, we sat right near that area. We talked for about 2 hours and then he walked me back to my hotel and I went to bed.

So, our conversation ranged all over the place. We talked about everything - because while we did technically meet online, we hadn't really talked and the profiles on this one site are very limited. So this was really a blind blind date - minus the fact that we knew we were both LDS and where we live, what we look like and our heights.

He's really interesting and is addicted to a board game (it'll stay un-named on here). So I learned a little bit behind the strategy of the game. He actually goes to contests all over the place. He was even in Portland for a tournament a few weeks ago. What is interesting is, he has family in Portland and would spend his summers there. I learned that he's the Young Men's president. To me, that equals = active LDS. WOW! That's a change. Someone who is involved in his calling.

So, in the course of the conversation, I asked a little bit more about his divorce. His profile lists "recently divorced" - so i asked how long ago recent was. He stated "the divorce will be final in 2 weeks"...... "so you're actually out with a married man, how do you feel about that"

well, my quick wit (non-existent) alluded me and so eventually I just said, "well... we're in a public place" - because in reality, my job has me going out to dinner with married men all the time. This just happened to be a date (yep, I'm justifying it).

So what do you think?

Here are my thoughts: A few years ago, I knew a girl who married a guy that she had met when he was still technically married. In fact, they say nothing happened but they were dating and engaged within about 1 week of the divorce being final. So, how do you become engaged, while someone is married, if you're not dating? I didn't like it and still don't really like that she married this guy. At the same time, she's happy and I am happy for her.

In the case of this guy, B, if I hadn't met him last night, then it would probably be months (he'll be in Portland over labor day) and by then we could have invested a lot of time with someone we've never met in person and wow can in-person make all the difference! So, I justify it. I also was completely in public with him and it was only dinner.

In retrospect, maybe I shouldn't have let him pay for dinner, but I also don't want to set a precedent that the guy doesn't have to be a gentleman and pay.

So.... I liked him.

Will we meet again? I think there's a possibility.

When I got to my hotel, I decided to IM him and thank him for dinner and just tell him how great it was to meet him. He answered back, "It was quite fun. Actually, I wasn't expecting much because of the short notice, but I actually had quite a bit of fun with you!

Till next time...
B"

so who knows. I do know that the next time I meet him, he will legitimately be divorced.

Thoughts?

UPDATE - he just IM'd "I should rephrase not expecting much"
